Determination of elasticity parameters in lumped element (mass-spring) models of deformable objects

چکیده
Lumped element models, also known as, mass-spring-damper models, are widely used to simulate deformable objects because of their simplicity and computational efficiency. However, the parameters of lumped element models are typically determined in an ad hoc fashion through trial-and-error, as these models are not directly based on continuum mechanics of deformable objects. In this paper, an alternative method to determine the elasticity parameters of lumped element models of deformable objects is presented. The elasticity parameters are determined using an optimization that minimizes the matrix norm of the error between the stiffness matrices of the linear lumped element model and the linear finite element model of the same object. The method has been developed for two-dimensions and for three-dimensional volumetric objects with tetrahedral and hexahedral (brick) elements. The method has been validated by comparing deformation results of the lumped element models with the deformation results given by finite element models, under various tension, and compression loading conditions. 2010 Elsevier Inc. متن کاملTheoretical Formulations for Finite Element Models of Functionally Graded Beams with Piezoelectric Layers
In this paper an overview of functionally graded materials and constitutive relations of electro elasticity for three-dimensional deformable solids is presented, and governing equations of the Bernoulli–Euler and Timoshenko beam theories which account for through-thickness power-law variation of a two-constituent material and piezoelectric layers are developed using the principle of virtua...
متن کاملAnalytical Spring-Mass Model of Impact Behavior of Double-Walled Carbon Nanotubes
In this study, an impact behavior of spherical striker on a double-walled carbon nanotube (DWCNT) is presented based on a three degree of freedom spring-mass model and the finite element (FE) simulations. The semi-analytical solution of the transverse impact of a striker on a DWCNT is investigated by using the elasticity nonlocal theory of Euler-Bernoulli (EBT) and Timoshenko (TBT) nanobeams. T...
متن کاملLumped Parameter Models for Numerical Simulation of the Dynamic Response of Hoisting Appliances
This paper describes three lumped parameters models for the study of the dynamic behavior of a boom crane. The models here proposed allows to evaluate the fluctuations of the load arising from the rope and structure elasticity and from the type of the motion command imposed by the winch. A calculation software was developed in order to determine the actual acceleration of the lifted mass and th...
